Most agricultural businesses are family businesses that are passed down from one generation to another. It is vital to ensure that ownership is transferred smoothly and effectively, taking account of the interests of all parties. There may be good reasons – such as the current state of the market – for altering the legal status of the business at the time of the transfer, for example by turning it into a private limited company or a limited partnership. Another possible problem is that the firm may find itself in financial difficulties, a situation which requires a swift and robust response.
