Surnames
Everyone has a surname. You do not choose your surname. Rather, you are given one at birth. However, there may be certain reasons why you cannot, or do not wish to, continue living with your own given surname. Under the law, you are allowed to change either your first names or your surname only in certain situations.
It is also possible that your surname was wrongly recorded in the municipal records when your birth was registered. In that case, you can also apply for a change of name.
Why should you contact our family law lawyers?
Because of the complex legislation on names, you will need expert advice in order to establish your position and identify whether you are entitled to apply for a change of name. We can help you follow the appropriate procedure and can advise you on the law on surnames.
